So, many of you have labs, goldens, shepherds as guides, but does anyone have or has had a boxer, can you share stories? I am going back into pilot in less than two weeks to receive a boxer because I'm allergic to long haired dogs like labs, goldens and shepherds, my choices were a boxer or a dby, and I could still get a doby, but the boxer is what will probably be the match I am told. So any boxer stories, warnings, info? Thanks.
no, I've never had a Boxer as a pet, or guide dog. Heck, I'd never heard of them being used as guide dogs. But I've been around some, and they're very cute, and the ones I saw were very intelligent, and good-tempered.
My Great Uncle Chris used to have a pet Boxer. Having met her though, I hardly think they're suitable guide dog material for anybody, lol. This little shit, almost knocked me flying down the stairs outside Chris's highrise flat when I was just 6 and gave me my first real bad experience with dogs to boot, plus she stank the whole flat out, yucksk!

Doesn't that go back to the way these dogs are trained though. I mean I would think your Rottweiler should not be around children but you insist he's the sweetest dog.
I've never had a Boxer, and that's not the breed I would choose for my own guide, but I'm sure she/he will be a great guide for you and you will love her. Good luck with your new dog.
My husband's parents have a pet boxer and while she is very energetic she isn't trained either. His grandfather also has one and he is sweet as can be. Over fed but that isn't his fault. smile Any dog, with training and proper care can be a good dog. Boxers are sweet dogs though. lol and what I find totally amusing is that I am allergic to boxers. lol The short fur gives me hives but go figure. Though you can be allergic to 3 things with dogs, saliva, dander or urine. So... not sure which it is with the boxers and me. lol
Bella's got a point, with most dogs, it's all in the raising and training of them.
This Rottie's one for the kids though. He's a big baby himself! Aw'w'w'w'w'w!

since it is a guide dog, I would imagine it will be well trained. Remember that you must establish your dominance as the pack leader immediately. They seem to need a firmer hand to keep their natural exuberance in check. My son's former house mate has one. She will obey her master but no one else.
agree with the last post. Dogs are pack animals, and it's up to the handler to be the ... well, technically it's a team, but to the dog, you're its pack leader.
